EP – Julian Shah-Tayler: The Torment Suite

by François Zappa

Just when I was finally going to write something about the last single by Julian Shah-Tayler a.k.a. The Singularity, I realized that he has released a new EP with five songs entitled The Torment Suite. The EP features the collaboration of David J (Bauhaus) and MGT (Mark Gemini Thwaite who played with The Mission and Peter Murphy). Both musicians also collaborated in Devil Knows, the single I wanted to write about today.

In this EP, we can find two originals, a cover, a remake and a remix. “All Good Soldiers” could be described as David Bowie singing a song from Radiohead’s Ok Computer, something that can only be read as a compliment. In this call to fight for what you believe in, Julian plays all the instruments. Instead in “Beautiful World” we can find the bass of David J and the guitar of MGT in a very catchy and powerful track. Julian’s remake of WeirdWolves’ “Eyes of Orion” is just perfect material for the dance floor. Julian sings in a David Bowie Tribute Band called The Band That Fell To Earth and he shows how he masters the songs of the Thin White Duke in his version of Loving The Alien. And last but not least, there is a remix by John Leach of the second song that gives the original a delicious 80s vibe.

Hailing from Leeds but currently living in Los Angeles, Julian Shah-Tayler has been involved in a considerable number of projects and has recorded music for films like Plush, made pop albums such as Coito Ergo Sum, or experimental works like God Particles. This EP is a good introduction to the music of such a versatile musician.
