Nightcrawler is a Spanish synthwave project imbued with diverse influences such as dark electro, industrial, darkwave, and EBM. Nightcrawler started out back in 2011 and shares his name with an X-Men character and a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. If you’ve seen the movie, Nightcrawler‘s music shares the same dark, nocturnal vibe and is perfect for driving down endless highways. Cinema is, in fact, one of his major influences, and Jordi considers himself a huge fan of both horror and science fiction and, of course, their soundtracks. Nightcrawler has released a large number of EPs since 2012’s Bassferatu, that was followed by, among others, Road Blasters, Knight Rider, and Unearthed, plus six full-lengths, the first being Metropolis, released in 2017. Additionally, his work as a remixer deserves special mention: we especially recommend his Cold Transmission Music Remixes album where he reworked tracks by Kalte Nacht, RINA PAVAR, Oliver Decrow, Lovataraxx, and Deus Ex Lumina. He had already honed his skills with some interesting remix EPs you can find on his Bandcamp. And finally, we should highlight some of his collaborations, from the track he released this year with Spammerheads to singles with the popular Dark Vektor and Mynationshit.
Nightcrawler delivers a digital EP about the issues that concern him, the malevolent forces looming over us. In the composer’s own words, each track represents a form of darkness, and so, after a short intro that draws you into the record’s sonic universe, we dive into the main theme with “Acid Rain,” which deals with the erosion of human connections. Nightcrawler employs shark synths that seem to penetrate you like acid rain in a great track that builds in intensity. “Corrupted System” reflects the corrupt society we live in, in a very cinematic way. “R.U.S.H.” strikes me as the EP’s best track; it revolves around anxiety and life’s relentless pace, hence the frenetic style and overwhelming production. “Resident Nightmares” delves into the author’s dreams and recurring nightmares. After an unsettling opening, the forcefulness that characterizes the producer kicks in as we’re immersed in a highly dreamlike atmosphere. With the “outro,” we seem to disconnect from these malevolent forces. The EP also includes club edits of “Acid Rain” and “R.U.S.H.”
