I woke up without remembering where I was. I looked around and saw that I was sleeping in a tent in what looked like a camp. I had <\/span>\u201cW-Fest\u201d<\/span> tattooed o<\/span>n my right arm<\/span>. On my left arm, instead, I had \u201cAfter one hour, you forget everything\u201d. Well, it\u2019s not a big deal, the same used to happen to me after a long night of drinking. I started to get going, as I only had one hour for a shower, a coffee and getting to the W-Fest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I was in front of the entrance of a festival, \u201cW-Fest\u201d I could read. There was a car on top of the entrance and a DJ playing \u201cAlways the Sun\u201d, although the weather was quite shitty. I had the first beer of the day and, after having a look around the rest of the festival grounds, I came in the main hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

TRUE ZEBRA<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The concert of True Zebra<\/b> had already started and I could see only the last two songs, \u201cShame\u201d and \u201cPush\u201d but it was enough to make me a fan of the project. Kevin Strauwen gave a really good and powerful performance. After the concert had finished, I heard some Belgian people saying that it had been one of the best concerts of the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n

ULTRANOIRE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

While I had my first beer, Ultranoire<\/b> started playing in the second stage. They appeared almost in black (with only the singer wearing red shoes) and started with \u201cLeaving Sensoria\u201d.\u00a0 The set focused on their first album, Disclosure<\/i> and we could hear \u201cBad Moon Rising\u201d, \u201cDrowning Man\u201d (with the video of Nuit Blanche by Arev Manoukian) \u201cPerfect Time\u201d, \u201cLost\u201d ( their best song in my humble opinion),\u00a0and \u201cDesperation\u201d. They finished with a song from their Individua<\/i>l EP: \u201cTwo Worlds Collide.\u201d A really good concert to start the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

INERTIA<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Wow, the band playing in front of me, had a really epic beginning. Inertia<\/b> played their best cards: \u201cDark Valentine\u201d, \u201cStormfront\u201d (my favorite, with some killer guitars) and \u201cAnticulture\u201d, all of them can bring a dead man back to life. Reza Udhin sings with an incredible passion and his band is really good. Their set included a cover of Peter Gabriel<\/b>\u2019s \u201cGames Without Frontiers\u201d and they managed to impregnate the song with their personality. After this, the guitar player asked us to shout \u201cFuck Brexit\u201d before the band kicking off with some EBM rhythms that made us dance. After this, the guitar player came and played between the public. A great concert of a great band to see live. Although it was quite early, I felt like having my first beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

TOYAH<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

On the stage, a famous singer from the eighties started playing. Maybe seeing bands from the past would help my poor memory. She started with \u201cGood Morning Universe\u201d, and continued with \u201cDance in the Hurricane\u201d and \u201cThunder in the Mountains\u201d. She proved to have an incredible energy and still a good voice for someone who confessed to being 61 years old. She played her cover of Martha and the Muffins<\/b>\u2019 \u201cEcho Beach\u201d (I love the original), and explained that it was a hit in 1985.\u00a0 Her set included \u201cRebel Run,\u201d \u201cIeya\u201d, \u201cBrave New World\u201d, and quite a decent new song called \u201cSensational\u201d (maybe the one I enjoyed the most). While I was drinking my first beer, she finished with \u201cI wanna Be Free\u201d. Enjoyable.<\/span><\/p>\n

MLADA FRONTA<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The French musician R\u00e9my Pelleschi (or Mlada Fronta<\/b>) started with \u201cMelt into the Road\u201d and some videos of motor racing. It was followed by his peculiar homage to the 80s arcades called \u201cArcade Rider\u201d and curiously, at the end of the venue, there were some arcades where everybody could play games like Tetris. I saw the arcades while I was ordering my first beer. Now that bands like Perturbator<\/b> and Carpenter Brut<\/b> are getting famous, Mlada Fronta should be next. The music changed as Mlada Fronta<\/b> moved into terror territory with \u201cDeathdreams\u201d, and \u201cFrom Hell\u201d. After a more futuristic track with a video of Terminator, he took us back to terror with \u201cThe Warriors\u201d, and some really frenetic synth lines. The concert finished with another track from Mlada Fronta\u2019s\u00a0last album No Tresspasing. Really good.<\/span><\/p>\n

ALLEZ ALLEZ<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

A band from the 80s! Opener \u201cShe\u2019s stirring up\u201d was a perfect way to commence a concert. A blast of funk that continued with \u201cMarathon Dance\u201d, \u201cLife in Reserve\u201d (Marine<\/b>\u2019s cover), where the singer sang like Donna Summer<\/b> in the classic \u201cI feel love\u201d during one of the choruses. The good thing about 80s music is that it\u2019s always fun, you can\u2019t get bored with tracks like \u201cTurn up the Meter\u201d or \u201cValley of the Kings\u201d. One of the best moments of the concert was the cover of \u201cPlay that Funky music\u201d, which was followed by \u201cAfrican Queen\u201d and \u201cFlesh and blood\u201d. They were really good musicians having a good time. It\u2019s a shame that they did not play \u201cSean Connery\u201d, a new track that I think it\u2019s really good. In one of the last songs, they included a snippet of \u201cRapper\u2019s Delight\u201d that was merged with another one of \u201cGood times\u201d. They finished their set with \u201cAllez Allez\u201d and a lot of people dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n

THE BREATH OF LIFE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

I could not believe it, one of my favorite bands was going to play on the stage: The Breath of Life<\/b>. Not only Isabelle Dekeyser has an incredible voice but the rest of the bands are really good. People always talk about the magic of some concerts, but the best example of this magic can always be found in the concerts of The Breath of Life<\/b>. Their set included \u201cCrime Passionnel\u201d, \u201cNoamina” (one of the songs where the keyboard player changed to violin), \u201cShining\u201d, \u201cUntil the day\u201d, \u201cBlackout\u201d (a really great song), \u201cNasty Clouds\u201d (the best song they played), \u201cFalling drops\u201d and the final \u201cValley\u201d. A truly amazing concert.<\/span><\/p>\n

KOSHEEN<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

A DJ appeared a played some drum n bass rhythms that, normally, I would have enjoyed, but there was a powerful reason to go to the Olivier Daout Stage. Although I stayed long enough to buy my first beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

BLAINE L. REININGER<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember how I ended up in this festival, but to see Blaine L, Reininger<\/b>, from Tuxedomoon<\/b> is always good. He played with all-time collaborator Georgio Valentino, a set with some of his songs like \u201cNight Air\u201d, and \u201cCaf\u00e9 Au Lait\u201d, he said some words in Italian that I don\u2019t know why I managed to understand (the sky is grey like in my mind) and he had a great sense of humor during all the concert. He continued with \u201cMystery and Confusion\u201d and dedicated \u201cBlue Sleep\u201d from his last album to Peter Principle that died a couple of years ago. A song about his cat and the way he eats followed (\u201cDry Food\u201d) before he started playing some songs of Tuxedomoon<\/b>. The first one of the set was \u201cJinx\u201d, but we also heard \u201cWhat use?\u201d and the classic \u201cNo Tears\u201d. A solo Tuxedomoon<\/b> set would have been very welcome but for a person who saw the band a few times live (one of the few things I would never forget), it was great to see some Reininger\u2019<\/b>s songs. It\u2019s a shame that he did not play \u201cBroken Fingers\u201d but overall, it was a really good gig.<\/span><\/p>\n

LEBANON HANOVER<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

A lot of people were watching the concert of one of the best Goth bands of the moment: Lebanon Hanover<\/b>. The band proved how to give a good concert in which we could hear some of their greatest songs. Sometimes danceable, sometimes creating a great atmosphere, they made us vibe with songs like the classics \u201cPetals\u201d, \u201cNorthern Lights\u201d, \u201cGallowdance\u201d or \u201cTotally Rot\u201d where Larissa lied down, playing dead. They sound way better than in record. It was nice to see them while drinking my first beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

NIK<\/b> KERSHAW<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The famous singer from the 80s started with \u201cThese Tears\u201d, and he continued with \u201cWide Boy\u201d, \u201cDancing girls,\u201d \u201cWhen a heart beats\u201d and the famous \u201cThe Riddle\u201d. Next was the turn of David Bowie<\/b>\u2019s \u201cAshes to Ashes\u201d, the Cervantine \u201cDon Quixote\u201d and his two bigger hits, his \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be good\u201d and Chesney Hawkes<\/b>\u2019 \u201cThe One and Only\u201d (actually written by Nik<\/b>) in the most 80s moment ever.\u00a0 After introducing the band, he finished with \u201cDon\u2019t let the sun go down on me\u201d. It was OK, but to be honest I am not a big fan of 80s pop, so I will try to avoid other concerts like this.<\/span><\/p>\n

SIGLO XX<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Belgian band started with \u201cUntil a day\u201d where the influence of Joy Divisi\u00f3n<\/b> was evident. They continued with \u201cEndless corridor\u201d, both sisters songs \u201cSisters Suicide\u201d and \u201cSister in the rain\u201d, \u201cEverything is on fire\u201d, \u201cYouth sentiment\u201d (with some really good guitar playing), \u201cLa vie dans la nuit\u201d, \u201cThe art of War\u201d, \u201cAfter the dream\u201d (wow, this one was pretty intense), \u201cNo one is innocent\u201d, \u201cDreams of Pleasure\u201d, the powerful \u201cThe beginner\u201d and \u201cFactory\u201d. The concert had a very nice sound and it was incredible to see all these classics live.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s all over now\u201d was, coherently, the last song. Great.<\/span><\/p>\n

HOWARD JONES<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Eighty pop? That can be pretty cool. Howard Jones, still with a lot of energy, started with \u201cEquality\u201d, continued with \u201cBeating Mr. Neg\u201d, \u201cEverlasting Love\u201d (with a snippet of \u201cLa bamba\u201d), \u201cHero in your eyes\u201d, and a very danceable \u201cHuman Touch\u201d. He sat down at the piano for \u201cHide and seek\u201d (song that he played at Live Aid), and finished with his hits: \u201cWhat is love,\u201d \u201cNew song\u201d (not really a new song) and \u201cThings can only get better\u201d. <\/span>It was OK, but to be honest I am not a big fan of 80s pop, so I will try to avoid other concerts like this.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

TONY HADLEY<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

I never thought I had the change to see a star from the 80s. At the beginning there were not that many people, but they arrived after the first minutes of concert. Most of his set consisted of Spandau Ballet<\/b>\u2019s classics like the beginner: \u201cTo cut a long story short\u201d, \u201cOnly when you leave\u201d, \u201cTrue\u201d, \u201cThrough the Barricades\u201d, \u201cInstinction\u201d, \u201cChant no 1\u201d, \u201cLifetime\u201d and the final \u201cGold\u201d. It was amazing that he still looks OK for his age and that his voice is still pretty decent. And he is still a good showman. I wonder how other musicians from his generation look now. He played some of his songs, like \u201cEverytime\u201d, \u201cKiller Blow\u201d and \u201cAccident waiting to happen\u201d. Before leaving with \u201cGold\u201d, he played a cover of Queen\u2019s<\/b> \u201cRadio Gaga\u201d, a song that, to be honest, I have never liked. When I was 18, I liked Spandau Balle<\/b>t so nostalgia had to fight against objectivity\u00a0during this concert. My first beer also helped nostalgia winning the battle.<\/span><\/p>\n

VNV NATION<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

It was 01: 20 when VNV Nation appeared on stage. I went to the bar to have a drink, but after the first sips, I started feeling a bit dizzy. It was my first beer, c\u2019mon! I left it and went to see the first concert of the night: VNV Nation<\/b>. They started with \u201cWhen the future\u201d, without a doubt, onw of their best songs. With \u201cChrome\u201d the public (who looked a bit tired, I din\u2019t know why), started dancing, and they continued with \u201cThe great divide\u201d, \u201cGenesis\u201d, \u201cIllusion\u201d, (people went crazy when they recognize the first notes) and \u201cOff Screen\u201d. Ronan Harris, the singer, looked really happy of being there, and he proved it while interpreting songs like the fantastic \u201cThe Farthest Star\u201d, \u201cLegion\u201d, \u201cGod of all\u201d ( with everybody dancing), \u201cResolution\u201d, \u201cNova\u201d or the final \u201cAll our sins\u201d. It was a great concert.<\/span><\/p>\n

I followed some people on their way to a camp. It was a bit cold and I had my jumper on. I heard these people talking about a W-Fest and they were saying only good things. Definitely it sounded like a place where I should have gone.<\/span><\/p>\n
