First big day of Primavera Sound. Out of the festival, my routine consists of sleeping until lunch time, eating well, resting a bit and heading to the forum with some alcohol in my veins. I had three gigs in a row in the Auditori, thus I thought this day was not going to be very hard. I was wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"I began with Bridget St. John<\/b> at 4 pm. She came with a cellist. Her first tune was a version of Bob Dylan<\/b>\u2019s \u201cJust like a Woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/b>From that moment on, I guessed the set was going to be special. At the end of the song, some electronic music came from out of nowhere. She continued with one of her tunes, the marvelous \u201cFly High,\u201d and she told us it was the first time she was playing in Barcelona. \u201cAsk Me No Questions,\u201d the tune that launched her career was the next one, followed by \u201cMon Gala Papillons\u201d and its beautiful lyrics: \u201cSi je mange, si je danse, je suis heureux.\u201d So beautiful was the a capella version of Joni Mitchell\u2019<\/b>s \u201cThe Fiddle and the Drum.\u201d For \u201cAmerica the Beautiful,\u201d she changed the lyrics and adapted it to the actual reality. She then finished with \u201cCastaway\u201d and the spiritual \u201cLazarus.\u201d Incredible, at least.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Apart from going to the bathroom, I did not change seats to see Julien Baker\u2019s<\/b> concert. I was not really acquainted with her music, but she managed to convince me. Very nice, very young and accompanied by a violinist, she began with \u201cSomething.\u201d All feeling, with an impressive voice, and of course, with really good tunes. We heard, in order: \u201cSour Breath,\u201d \u201cShadowboxing,\u201d the very acclaimed \u201cSprained Ankle,\u201d \u201cRejoice,\u201d \u201cFuneral Pyre.\u201d She played the piano for \u201cGo home,\u201d and finished with \u201cTurn Out the Lights\u201d and \u201cAppointments.\u201d Very good as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The following gig was The Necks\u2019<\/b>, the Australian improvisation trio. They began with the piano, and, gradually, they incorporated the double bass and some percussions. After a part with a very repetitive piano, the double bass became the protagonist and the rhythm began to accelerate and became weirder and weirder, to finish in an incredible explosion of free. Around the 40th minute, the music became more relaxed and they finished a bit before the stated hour. I liked it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"In part because it fitted my schedule, I went to see Tomberlin<\/b>, who was playing alone the beginning of\u00a0\u201cTornado\u201d when we arrived. She continued with \u201cAny Other Way\u201d and \u201cYou Are Here,\u201d where a man accompanied her playing the guitar. Sadly, her gig was a bit boycotted: we could hear the sound of\u00a0Stephen Malkmus\u2019s<\/b> show on Primavera stage. She continued with \u201cSelf-Help,\u201d she played alone \u201cFebruary,\u201d accompanied \u201cSeventeen,\u201d the sad \u201cUntitled 1\u201d and the final \u201cI Am Not Scared.\u201d It\u2019s a shame this was not the time nor the place for her gig. If you\u2019ll have some languid singers, they should be playing in the Auditori, where you can\u2019t hear the sound of other concerts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, I went to Adidas to see Shonen Knife<\/b> who opened their show with \u201cJump Into the New World\u201d from their new album, followed by \u201cTwist Barbie\u201d or \u201cRamen Rock.\u201d We began to get hungry with their enjoyable tunes: \u201cSweet Candy Power,\u201d \u201cAll You Can Eat,\u201d \u201cSushi Bar Song,\u201d \u201cWasabi\u201d or \u201cBanana Chips.\u201d We had a lot of fun, we only missed the Nick Lowe<\/b> version of \u201cCruel to be Kind\u201d they usually play.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clairo,<\/b> who was playing at the Pitchfork had the worst sound of the whole festival, at least of the gigs I\u2019ve been able to see. It did not matter if Cuco<\/b> came to play\u00a0\u201cDrown\u201d with her, or whether she was nice: the show was horrible, part because of the tremendous bass sounds and her very low voice, part because of the audience who did not stop speaking. It\u2019s only at the end, with tunes like \u201cPretty Girl\u201d and \u201c4ever\u201d that people eventually shut up and even sang her songs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"We had our next programmed gig just after Clairo<\/b>: the classical punk band Stiff Little Fingers<\/b>. It was like a trophy I was missing for my collection of 70s punk, and I was really eager to see them. They began with the powerful \u201cLaw and Order\u201d and \u201cAt the Edge.\u201d Right after it, they played anthems like \u201cSuspect Device,\u201d the homage to Clash<\/b>\u2019s leader, \u201cStrummerville,\u201d \u201c16 shots,\u201d \u201cWasted life\u201d and the incredible \u201cState of Emergency.\u201d Before \u201cMy Dark Places,\u201d the singer, Jake Burns, spoke to us about his depression issues. \u201cNobody\u2019s Hero\u201d and \u201cGotta Get Away\u201d led the way to the final, which consisted of \u201cTin Soldier\u201d and \u201cAlternative Ulster,\u201d which was for a lot of people, the best tune of the festival. I wish we\u2019d have more punk like this.<\/span><\/p>\n

I made a return to commercial pop with Sigrid<\/b>, again at Pitchfork. Surprisingly this time, the sound was very good. Even if her music is not really my thing, she was great and she has a lot of good tunes. She could be a great star. She began with \u201cSucker Punch\u201d for a very crowded audience. I can highlight \u201cMine Right Now,\u201d \u201cHigh Five,\u201d followed by \u201cDon\u2019t Kill my Vibe,\u201d the slow \u201cNever Mine,\u201d and the final with \u201cDon\u2019t Feel Like Crying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, they used the same marquee they use for the Trashville stage at Azkena Rock Festival for the stage which once was the Hidden Stage. There played Pylon Reenactment Society<\/b>, the new vehicle of the original singer of the band from Athens. Along with very good musicians who wanted to have some fun, she managed to recreate the sound of Pylon<\/b> in the 80s. They began with the crazy \u201cBeep.\u201d At this instant, one could see this was gonna be great. They continued with \u201cVolume,\u201d \u201cDanger, with a dance of the guitarist who managed to emulate the original sound of the band. The party continued with “Feast on my Heart,” and “Crazy” , famous among us thanks to REM\u2019<\/b>s version. “Human Body” was followed by the new tune of the band, called “Messenger,” which was not out of tune in comparison to the classics. During \u201cDub,\u201c we saw that Chandra,<\/b> who had been playing before and whom we could not see because of an overlap in the schedule, was standing by our side. People were climbing on the stage while they were playing the last tune, \u201cM Train.\u201d Then, the singer finished the gig embracing the public. A ten out of ten.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"As they finished a bit before the stated hour, we had time to see Carcass<\/b>\u2019s final. We saw some very powerful tunes and we are now craving for more. Not far from here, there was the Rayban Studio where was playing Demdike Stare<\/b>. I had already seen them, but I always enjoy going to their gig to see what they\u2019re going to do. This time, they gave a powerful show, less difficult to hear than other times we saw them. There was not a lot of people for their mind-blowing music, which sometimes sounded industrial. We could even dance for a while. Good, as always.<\/span><\/p>\n

I returned to Adidas to see\u00a0Myrkur,<\/b> who was pregnant, who gave a very good show. They had some small technical issues, and for a while, we could see that how she got angry with the sound engineer. I didn\u2019t listen to her music very much, but everyone present was blown by her voice. She ended alone, accompanied by her drum, with a Nordic love song, \u201cWillemann og Magnhild.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I could almost see the entire gig of Empress<\/b> Of,<\/b> whom I had seen some years before, but this time, it was far better. She began with \u201cTrust me baby\u201d and \u201cIn Dreams,\u201d which she sang in Spanish. Now she plays with another woman. They had technical issues and they were left soundless during a tune. They tried to solve the issue without no one helping them. They played songs from their new album, but they also had the time to play \u201cWater Water,\u201d \u201cRealise You\u201d or \u201cWoman is a Word.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I went running to the Rayban stage to see FKA Twigs.\u00a0<\/b>It was already full. I really wanted to see her and she did not disappoint me: from the first tune \u201cHide,\u201d she sang hidden, until the final and very moving\u00a0\u201cCellophane,\u201d it was one of the best festival\u2019s concerts. \u201cWater,\u201d her famous single, was second in the set, followed by \u201cPendulum,\u201d \u201cFigure 8,\u201d \u201cVideo Girl\u201d or \u201c1000 Eyes.\u201d She made some incredible choreography with a sword, and the pole dance we see in her new video. In the middle of the show, the big curtain that stood in the background fell, and we saw in a metal structure the band and the dancers. The final tracks consisted of \u201cPapi Pacify,\u201d \u201cLights On\u201d and \u201cTwo Weeks.\u201d Very, very well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"I ran to the Bits area to see the last hour and a half of Octo Octa B2B Eris Drew <\/b>and they gave me what I needed. When I finally arrived, the music sounded very 80s and according to my friend Shazam, they played , X-Press<\/b> 2<\/b>\u2019s \u201cSay What,\u201d Ralpho<\/b> Rosario<\/b>\u2019s \u201cAll Right Now!\u201d DJ Tonka<\/b>\u2019s \u201cOld School,\u201d Universal Robot<\/b> Band<\/b>\u2019s \u201cDisco Boogie Woman,\u201d Mighty Dub Kat<\/b>\u2019s \u201cGhetto Girl,\u201d Gypsymen<\/b>\u2019s \u201cDaylite,\u201d Lone<\/b>\u2019s \u201cBlue Moon Tree,\u201d Miles Fontaine<\/b>\u2019s \u201cGot to Go,\u201d Johnny Loopz<\/b>\u2019s \u201cI Can\u2019t Stop,\u201d Marco Bertek<\/b>\u2019s \u201cWe Leave in the Sunset,\u201d Armando<\/b>\u2019s \u201c100% of Disin\u2019U,\u201d Slo Moshum<\/b>\u2019s \u201cBells of New York,\u201d Inner City<\/b>\u2019s \u201cFollow Your Heart,\u201d Koes Plus<\/b>\u2019 \u201cBunga Ditepi Jalan,\u201d Glass Candy<\/b>\u2019s \u201cNaked Glass\u201d and \u201cUnderstand this Groove.\u201d They got us a surprise: they put some drum n\u2019bass with Amazon II \/ Aphrodite\u2019s<\/b> \u201cBeat Booyaa.\u201d The DJs were always playing with vinyls. I was very tired when I went back to the hotel, as the sunlight began to show up.<\/span><\/p>\n
