The Juggernauts are (finally) coming! The Belgian EBM band already ran over us during the last Sinner’s Day festival but now it’s the time that they show their power on the Spanish soil. For the occasion, we have interviewed <\/span><\/strong>Peter Mastbooms, also known as DJ BORG, who will be playing with his unstoppable Juggernauts in Madrid at DarkMad Festival on the 29th of April.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"\u2014When did you get interested in EBM and how was it?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014I started out as a DJ in somewhere 1984 \u2026 My first records were from The Human league<\/strong> (Travelogue<\/em>), The Sister Of Mercy<\/strong> (The Reptile House<\/em>), Joy Divisio<\/strong>n (Unknown Pleasures<\/em>), Liaisons Dangereuses<\/strong> and\u2026 Geography<\/em> and No Comment<\/em> from Front 242<\/strong>\u2026\u00a0 In that time, it was normal to have a broad taste\u2026 Maybe also because there was only a couple of good bands around, so you didn\u2019t have much choice and there was still no oversupply like today. Anyway, I soon got more and more hooked on the strong beats, sequences and raw vocals of EBM.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014As you said before, you started as a DJ in the 80s in a club called The Phantom that you ran with your brother, right? How do you remember those days?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>These were the mid-80s, THE heydays of New-Wave & the prime of EBM music\u2026 It was a wonderful time! We even hosted live shows at our club from The Klinik<\/strong>, Insek<\/strong>t and many more!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 One of the first bands you founded was The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, right? Honestly, I could not find any more info about this. Was it also EBM? Did you record anything with them?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Yeah well, there was not really any internet at that time, but we did released a tape with The 4 Horsemen OTA<\/strong> which even had some local success\u2026 At that time I was, and secretly I still am, a huge fan of The Bollock Brothers<\/strong> so I decided to call my first band after their legendary album with the same name. Anyway, I looked-up my copy for you to check the track list and to my surprise this tape had indeed already a decent amount of EBM tracks and ingredients on it! Thank you for the flashback!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Another band you started was The Lance of Allotment. With them you released only a cassette. Can you please tell us more about this project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Due to some line-up changes the band morphed in the beginning of the 90s from The Four Horsemen OTA<\/strong> into The Lance Of Allotment<\/strong>. We played all over Belgium and supported bands like Dive<\/strong>, Insekt<\/strong> and The Neon Judgement<\/strong>. And yes, this tape smelled very EBM-like too!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014You were part of the Klinik from 2009, how was it? Later you have been collaborating with Dirk Ivens in other projects doing the “technical stuff.” It’s the same that you do with Absolute Body Control, right?\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Before 2009, I was already the resident sound engineer for all of Dirk Ivens’<\/strong> projects, so also for The Klinik<\/strong>. So, when Marc Verhaegen became too ill to tour anymore, Dirk<\/strong> asked me to join him on stage. And so I did from the 2009 Tinitus festival in Stockholm, Sweden until the very last The Klinik<\/strong> show in Berlin in 2014. Together we played about 30 shows all over the world, again a great chapter in my musical career.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014And then finally, The Juggernauts. The band was born after meeting Glenn Keteleer. How was it? What urged you to create a new EBM band?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Well, I was forced to quite another band I was part of at that time, but I still had so many ideas and plans in my head, so I decided the time was ripe to have my very own project again. I met Glenn at a The Neon Judgement<\/strong> concert and told him how eager I was to start a new (EBM) project. Some days later I was invited to his studio and we recorded our first ever single\/track \u2018Phoenix\u2019. It took us just one afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Paraphrasing Zappa. Does humour belong in EBM?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Who the fuck is Zappa<\/strong>? I guess some dancing fool smelling like Vaseline?<\/span>
\nAnyway, why not!? Humour should belong everywhere at any time! It makes life a bit more bearable, doesn\u2019t it?! I love the way Sturm Caf\u00e9<\/strong> plays with humour for instance. This being said, I personally sometimes have the feeling it can get too much\/stupid\/cheesy-easy\u2026 Let\u2019s leave the love for drama and (fake) feel good theme to pop music and the brain dead Tik-Tok generation. With The Juggernauts<\/strong> I want to try and keep it bit more serious \u2026 and that\u2019s why I created my crazy alter ego band Porno Karaoke.<\/strong>.. I need to let go my craziness sometimes too!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014What inspired you for the Juggernauts look? Marvel comics or just mythology?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>I\u2019m not a Marvel fan so I would go for mythology\u2026 I wanted to look dark, doomy and futuristic\u2026 But to be honest\u2026 The band\u2019s name and look were also inspired by Call of Duty, a game I played on my PlayStation at that time. At one point in this game these enemy Juggernaut soldiers came charging at you, scaring the shit out everyone because these fuckers were so very hard to kill!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u2014How did you approach the composition of the first EP? Did you try to bring something new to the style?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Our first recording and single Phoenix<\/em> was picked-up by the Berlin Out Of Line label and ended up in one of their compilations called Awake The Machines.<\/em> Soon after, gig requests began pouring in, so we almost didn\u2019t find the time to sit down together to write and record new songs. That\u2019s why the label suggested to have some remixes on our first EP so we could at least release something and had something to sell while touring. I\u2019m not going to claim we did something new, we just used all our experience and influences but also tried very hard not to fall in the copycat trap.\u00a0 <\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u2014As you just said, the<\/strong>\u00a0EP came with remixes by True Zebra (logical selection), Plastic Noise Experience, Implant and Spetnaz. Why did you choose these three bands? I guess they are also friends of you.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Since I\u2019m not a big fan of today’s remixes I decided that IF we have to have remixes on our first EP it could well be those of some of our closest friends. Kevin\/True Zebra<\/strong> did the remix long before he was enlisted in The Juggernauts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Three years later the band published The Juggernauts are coming<\/em>, a full album with some new versions of the songs released on the EP. Why did you record these new versions? To update the sound of the tracks?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Like I said, we barely had the time to finish our first songs to our liking, but I guess they evolved a bit during our shows, so they sound maybe a bit updated.<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u2014You wrote the lyrics for the album. Where do you take the inspiration to write them?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Sadly, today\u2019s society is a huge source of inspiration, frustration and disbelieve\u2026 I think I could write a new song after every late-night news Tv show\u2026 Reality is often crueller and more unbelievable than fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014You have always been linked to EBM, how do you see the genre today?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>I grew up with the EBM music of Front 242<\/strong>, Skinny Puppy<\/strong>, Portion Control<\/strong> so why should I deny that legacy\u2026 Sometimes I feel sorry when I see bands trying to distance themselves from the \u201cscene\u201d and their past\u2026 They seem to have forgotten and\/or have no respect for the fans that supported them from the very beginning\u2026 These artists mainly exists because of those fans\u2026 And now these artists ridicule them for not being open-minded etcetera. Well, I\u2019m very open-minded but shit music stays shit music, get over it! (In case any of my friend-artists are reading this, of course I\u2019m not speaking about your wonderful project and music, no pun intended!)<\/span>
\nBut on the other hand I have to admit that some EBM fans & bands are not really contributing to the great genre it still is. Let\u2019s be honest\u2026 there\u2019s a lot (too much?) of crap out there\u2026 But hey, there\u2019s still more crap in mainstream and pop music!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Kevin Strauwen is now part of the band, we know him as True Zebra and even interviewed him in the past. How would you describe his contribution to the band? Do you also like his solo work?\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>When Glenn lost his appetite to go on tour with The Juggernauts<\/strong>, we both opted for Kevin to replace him on the e-drums. It soon proved to have been the right choice indeed. Kevin brings a lot of energy on stage while he\u2019s banging those drums. He\u2019s also a great producer with good ears and ideas, which he proved recently by mixing and mastering of our brand new six track EP FEAR<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014Now there is also Terence Gryson on samplers & synths. How do you think things have changed having him?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>I always wanted to expand the live band because it simply looks better on stage. Terence is mainly responsible for the tapestry underneath our live-sound, does backing vocals, sampling and synth parts\u2026 Thanks to him our live shows sound more complete and atmospheric. Just like Kevin, he\u2019s also great friend and asset to The Juggernauts.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014You are also a famous DJ of the scene. Do you play Juggernauts songs in your sets?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>I try to refrain \u2026 But it depends on the occasion, setting… sometimes I sin\u2026 Like if I want to test a new track or when people request one of our songs. But I don\u2019t DJ to promote my own music, I DJ because I like to entertain people. And there are already plenty of \u201cother\u201d great bands and tracks to work with, I think. \ud83d\ude1b\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014What are the plans of the band for the future? Are The Juggernauts going to save us?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Well, we just announced the release our long awaited FEAR<\/em> [EP] (01.12.2022) which will be released digitally as download as well as on a shiny Digipack CD. A vinyl 12\u201d is also ordered too but sadly the vinyl production delays these days are so huge that it will take some months to have it in our hands, I\u2019m afraid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Will the Juggernauts<\/strong> save you? Well, I would love to say yes but look around\u2026 Stupidity, ignorance and violence seem to gain ground every day\u2026 But! If you all buy or new EP and start following us on Facebook we will still might be able to do something!<\/span>

\u2014As mentioned before, you are also performing as Porno Karaoke with the same line-up as The Juggernauts. How can you describe us this new live band? You are playing covers, aren’t you?\"\"<\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Well, we played some covers with The Juggernauts<\/strong> in the past like “Coitus Interruptus” and “Der Mussolini”, simply because at the time we didn\u2019t have enough songs ourselves. But at the same time, I always had the idea\/dream of having my own Revolting Cock<\/strong>\u2019s style cover band.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, it was a sleeping project until end of 2019, when a scheduled Dive<\/strong> show in Sao Paulo Brazil fell through last minute. The promoter desperately asked me if I could please do \u201csomething\u201d instead, as my flight was already booked anyway. So, I dug up some of the covers versions I worked on over the past years and took the stage as Porno Karaoke<\/strong>. To me, and to everyone\u2019s surprise, it was such a success they immediately invited me the same night to come back as Porno Karaoke<\/strong>\u2026 Only 3 months later!<\/span>
\nAfter those two solo shows it felt natural too me to ask my both friends and Juggernaut<\/strong> colleagues to join me on stage also with crazy this project. Why change a winning team!? <\/span>
\nUnlike most cover bands we do not try to copy the original songs as much as possible but we tend to give them our own electro-industrial twitch. We play songs from Cabaret Voltaire<\/strong>, DAF<\/strong>, Divine<\/strong>, Depeche Mode<\/strong>, Executive Slacks<\/strong>, Eurythmics<\/strong>, Fad Gadget<\/strong>, NIN<\/strong> and many more \u2026 <\/span>

\u2014Talking about other kind of covers, you also design cover artwork for albums, and you have done quite a few. How did you start doing this? What’s your favourite?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>I already liked to draw and create stuff since I was a kid. Later, in the 80s I designed most of the party and concert posters for our the Phantom. I also designed our tape release layouts. Later Dirk Ivens<\/strong> asked me to take care of his Minimal Maximal<\/em> and some of the latest Daft Records releases. Today I\u2019m also doing all the artwork for The Juggernauts<\/strong> releases and live visuals. I know I\u2019m not that good, but I love to do it and I like to be creative\u2026 I can\u2019t help it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014What can we expect of the concert at DarkMad?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/strong>Well, it seems the wait is finally over! After all the postponing the date is finally set now, I guess! We sure are ready as hell to present our new FEAR<\/em> [EP] in front of a Spanish live audience! In fact, it will be our first ever show on Spanish soil so don’t miss out!<\/span><\/p>\n
