After a 24-year hiatus, they returned with a new singer and five new albums that show a surprising evolution that has taken them down unexplored paths. We will have the opportunity to see them play some of their new songs, as well as the classics, at the Santuario festival in Madrid, which will take place on 15 November. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-31357\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled-300x187.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"281\" \/>\u2014Danse Crazy was born after the fusion of the bands Y? and Lips X, where Paul and Lyndon were playing. How was the music of these two bands? There is nothing released right?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: Well there is a track from<strong> Y?<\/strong> on a compilation album of bands from Sheffield and surrounding areas called <em>Bouquet of Steel<\/em> \u2013 the track was called &#8220;End of Act one&#8221;. <strong>Lips-X<\/strong> (Mine and Lyndon\u2019s band) put out a cassette album with around 10 original songs where we played and sang everything ourselves. I\u2019m pretty sure there are not many (if any) surviving copies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Why the change of name from Danse Crazy to Danse Society? What has it to be with 2 Tone? Did the band think that they could get confused with a ska revival band?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: Yes, the 2 Tone label and Ska were really making headway into the mainstream, we could feel ourselves being confused with those acts like<strong> The Selector<\/strong>, <strong>Specials<\/strong>, <strong>Madness<\/strong> etc. \u2013 Something we obviously did not want to happen with the type of music we were playing, not that there was anything wrong with that type of music, of course, it just wasn\u2019t us and we felt the time was right for a change of name especially as we had a line-up change with Paul Hampshire (Bee) and Dave Patrick leaving and Tim Wright joining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014The band created their own label, Society Records in 1981. Back then it was not that usual. How did the band got the idea? Was it easy to manage it being so young?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: It was more a vehicle for getting our first single out. This was self-financed and we knew we had to help ourselves as no one else was going to do it. So Society records was born, and it just continued from there really. We didn\u2019t really think about it too much. Myself and Lyndon basically managed the physical side of things and Steve did a lot of the promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014The second single of the band, \u201cThere is no shame in Death\u201d is, nowadays, considered a Goth classic, but back then I guess it was quite adventurous to release a song that long. Were you afraid of releasing such track? How was it received back in the day?<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31362\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-768x1151.png 768w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-1025x1536.png 1025w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5-585x877.png 585w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled5.png 1061w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: It was the second single but it was recorded first, and with &#8220;Clock&#8221; being successful we needed to put something out quite quickly to keep the momentum going. Our new manager at the time Marcus Featherby, financed the production and we were all up for it at the time, as it gave us some space to write some more new songs. &#8220;No shame&#8221; was something different and I think that was the main appeal to us releasing it at the time, the last thing we wanted to happen was to pigeonhole ourselves into one type of music (we still don\u2019t).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014In &#8220;In Heaven (Everything Is Fine)&#8221;, there is a more experimental approach, which can also be found in most of Bauhaus\u2019 albums. Do you think that modern post-punk bands have lost that sense of experimentation found when the genre was being developed?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I think we were being influenced by so many new things, not just the music scene but film, TV, fashion, politics, etc. David Lynch had been on our radar and had really made an impact \u2013 Eraserhead was so different from anything else that was about, musically we wanted to emulate that, I think a few bands of the time felt the same. Another influence on that song was<strong> Eno<\/strong>\u2019s solo ambient works, <em>Music for Films<\/em> springs to mind and <em>Music for Airports<\/em> \u2013 we just stuck all these ideas into a melting pot and see what came out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014In interviews, the band has repeatedly cited Hawkwind and Pink Floyd, not the most frequent influence in the \u201980s. How do you think that these bands have helped create the sound of The Danse Society?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: We were all massive music fans and listened voraciously to everything we could. We grew up in the \u201970s where bands like <strong>Floyd<\/strong>, <strong>Hawkwind<\/strong>, <strong>Sabbath,<\/strong> etc. lived on our record players. Although we left that music behind, there were still overtones and undertones popping occasionally in our music. In our first bands at school I played covers by <strong>Rush<\/strong>, <strong>Wishbone Ash<\/strong>, <strong>Led Zep<\/strong> (this was before punk was born) and this is how I learned to play guitar, as well as going to see many of these bands before the 77\/78 punk explosion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-31368\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-1536x1025.png 1536w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-2048x1367.png 2048w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7.png 1920w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-1170x781.png 1170w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-585x390.png 585w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled7-263x175.png 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>\u2014The second LP <\/strong><strong><em>Heaven is waiting<\/em>\u00a0 was the album that should have put the band in the same league (commercially I mean) as Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy or The Mission. What went wrong according to you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: In my opinion, we were let down by the record company in that the A&amp;R man who signed us, believed in us and promised us the world (lol) left before the release, which put a massive damper on the project \u2013 his replacement did not have anything invested in us and so only went through the motions when it came to promoting. I also think in hindsight that maybe we weren\u2019t that \u2018commercial\u2019 in terms of singles. I always thought of us as more of an \u2018albums\u2019 band. I think if we had stuck around a bit longer we would have been as big as <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Mission<\/strong>\/<strong>Sisters, <\/strong>etc. but \u2026 well it obviously wasn\u2019t meant to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014If I am not wrong, the label was Arista. How did the problems start<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: As I mentioned above, without investment of time and money nothing lasts, and all Arista wanted was a quick return which meant a \u2018hit\u2019 single. When that wasn\u2019t forthcoming we were out. It\u2019s a sad, but not uncommon, tale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014In the song \u201cSay it again,\u201d the band worked with producers Stock, Aitken &amp; Waterman. I am really curious of how was working with them. Were they very demanding? Or they just gave you some directives?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: They had a set sound and way of working for sure, you can pretty much tell one of their records from the first few seconds \u2013 it was called the \u2018Hit Factory\u2019 for a reason and it really was a factory style set up. It\u2019s a shame we didn\u2019t get the \u2018hit\u2019 part. It was very much a case of fitting the song to the style they worked with \u2013 if you listened to the demo of &#8220;Say it again&#8221; it is very different!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014And <em>Looking through<\/em> consisted in some demos that were used to get a new label but finally<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-31377\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-1024x681.png 1024w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-780x516.png 780w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-585x389.png 585w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4-263x175.png 263w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/untitled4.png 1074w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/> the band chose to release them. Do you think it was a good idea back then? A few years ago, Maurizio Pustianaz worked on them. How would you describe the way he improved them?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: The<em> Looking Through<\/em> recordings were demos to try and get another deal after Arista, and we nearly succeeded, but then that fell apart and everything started to drift, so in the end we decided to release them as a CD. However the pressing was quite poor really. Maurizio (who has remastered a lot of our older stuff) was a big fan and did a fantastic job returning the tracks to something like I remembered hearing them in the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014What happened at the point with the band? Were you not very happy with the situation?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: As I said, things began to drift, we were disillusioned with the whole business, drink and drugs played a part and with no direction, the fragmentation began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014All the members of the band (except the singer) continued as Johnny in the Clouds. Can you please tell us anything about the days with this short-lived band?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: After Steve left to find fame and fortune in London and then LA, we briefly though we could continue with another singer (Mark from <strong>Music For Pleasure<\/strong> \u2013 which was David\u2019s old band before replacing Lyndon) \u2013 It was great for a while and we wrote and recorded a good album (I listened to it recently) and we played a couple of gigs, but I think in hindsight the rot was already settled in and there was no coming back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Paul, how was your life during the 24-year hiatus of The Danse Society?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: After <strong>Jonny and the Clouds<\/strong>, I worked with Tim and Andy O from <strong>Blue Zoo<\/strong> on a project, and some TV and film stuff with David. Then I joined the band <strong>Party Day,<\/strong> initially to produce and then to play guitar. It was exciting, fresh, loud, raw and I loved it, plus there was no pressure, it was like being back at the start of <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Danse Society<\/strong>. Of course, I needed to pay the mortgage, etc. so I managed a comic shop for a while, then an HMV record store and then we moved to Scarborough and I worked at various jobs before starting my teaching career. You created that band in 1992, right? Was it your first band?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth:<\/strong> <strong>Blooding Mask<\/strong> wasn\u2019t my first band but it\u2019s the first band I have founded. It\u2019s a project that involves esotericism and experimental music with strong orchestratic, tribal and operatic sound in several languages. Because of the esoteric content, I am focused on catching the right cosmic alignments and rituals, rather than being concerned about keeping up with a schedule. It\u2019s a niche project but the followers are very keen. In some ways it\u2019s a relief because it was never born as music. The music side of it is a consequence. This is why in nearly 30 years <strong>Blooding Mask<\/strong> counts only 5 albums until today. As a matter of perspective, the new album <em>Autopsy of a Dream<\/em> was not actually late, it took the right time to come out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014What can you please tell us about that last album that you released with your other band?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 0cm; font-stretch: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Maeth:<\/strong> A<em>utopsy of a Dream<\/em> could be introduced as a one and half album. The set list is so long! It was matched with a new and revised tarot card deck designed by Italian artist Alessandra Centi. I have basically upgraded the major arcana into a current perspective of the occult. The tracks explore a plethora of symbols gravitating around the concept of dream which is failing humanity. The dream of submitting the great goddess, the dream of silencing feminine energy is costing us endless wars and rage. It is time masculine energy sets aside before it\u2019s too late. Even Mars kneeled in front of Venus. Time to admit we can\u2019t go on this way.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 0cm; font-stretch: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The album is therefore a thought provoking ensemble that wants to wake up anyone who feels life has become too uneasy to be accepted any longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Was it difficult for the Danse Society to come back with a new singer? How did the fans receive it?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: Overall, it was generally positive. There were the usual naysayers\/haters, mainly from people who hadn\u2019t even listened to the <em>Change of Skin<\/em> album \u2013 it\u2019s an occupational hazard these days (sad trolls with nothing better to do) \u2013 but we never reformed \u2018for the fans\u2019 we reformed because we wanted to make music again and were enjoying that. Having Maeth involved as the singer was a revelation in sound and song writing (we loved it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth: <\/strong>I have to be totally honest here: I was amongst the people waiting to see the reformation with him, so I was very surprised when I was made aware he disappeared after only recording the vocals on one track. Because the first announcement included him, it was a bit of a shock at first for many people, however, after a decade I can tell you that the vast majority of followers are strongly supporting us despite some initial controversy. The main reason why the way our sound has been evolving since 1980 until today is because <strong>The Danse Society<\/strong> was never a band to fit in a box or to become a cliche. Replacing Steve was no joke. His talent and presence was very distinctive and any other male singer would have matched like a clown at a funeral. The band took a real leap of faith with me and confirmed they have the ability to reinvent themselves after 40 years. The 17th of April 2026 we celebrate the 15-year anniversary since the reformation with me. If you think about it, this is longer than the first line-up survived in the \u201980s, and seeing newer and older generations enjoying our gigs together is the reason why we are still here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014How is Steve Rawlings doing? He has completely lost contact with us. We hope he is OK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014About <em>Change of Skin<\/em>, apart from the evident changes, the album is quite long specially for The Danse Society standards. When were these songs composed? The song sang by Steve Rawlings only appeared on the CD edition, right?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: No, the song \u2018Towers&#8221; was only released a couple of years ago (out of general interest) and appeared digitally and on CD on the<em> 40 years of Danse<\/em> compilation. \u2018Towers&#8221; was re-recorded as the title track for the <em>Change of Skin<\/em> album (appropriately).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth:<\/strong> &#8220;Towers&#8221; is the only track recorded with Steve but it was not included in the album at all. The tracks were composed and recorded between 2010 and 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth, was <em>Scarey Tales<\/em> the first album where you help compose the songs? How did the band get the concept for the record?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth: <\/strong>To be honest, I co-wrote the lyrics for <em>Change of Skin<\/em> and I wrote the vocal melodies on all the tracks. Only the instrumental parts were already written when I joined in. However, <em>Scarey Tales<\/em> opened a completely new chapter because we started exchanging demos and putting all our ideas together from the start. We were looking forward to getting new songs out there, which is why the album is much shorter, compared to <em>Change of Skin<\/em>. The concept was about scary stories to tell into music, and a rhyme book to accompany them, a bit like a soundtrack to a film but more old school. There are some nice influences there. &#8220;The Tale&#8221; is my favourite. I was inspired by Lovecraft when I wrote the lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014The band has recorded some peculiar versions, first Jefferson Airplane\u2019s &#8220;<\/strong><strong>White Rabbit&#8221; and in <em>VI<\/em>, &#8220;The Sound of Silence&#8221;. Any special reason to choose those songs? Do you like to give a darker version of famous songs?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: Both those cover songs were chosen by me \u2013 I knew Maeth would do an amazing vocal on &#8220;White Rabbit&#8221; and I thought we could do an interesting version and put a darker spin on the iconic tracks (which I think we succeeded in) &#8211; I was particularly pleased with &#8220;Sound of Silence&#8221; as it started from the guitar riff, but unfortunately it was overshadowed somewhat by the version by <strong>Disturbed<\/strong> that came out around the same time (great minds and all that lol).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014According to the description of yoursecond-to-last album: \u201c<em>Sailing Mirrors<\/em> is a dark exploration into life past present and future.\u201d How do you think that the past has treated the band?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: I don\u2019t think too much about the past, other than I am grateful for the opportunities it afforded us (as a band and as a person) \u2013 I\u2019m more interested in the present and the future and my next project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Do you think that <em>Sailing Mirrors<\/em> is an album that can appeal to old fans?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth:<\/strong> Judging by the feedback it certainly does! With the exception of the title track, which is very orchestral with David Whitaker\u2019s awesome contribution, most tracks still reflect the original sound. It is still the same entity reinvented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-31387\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/descarga-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/descarga-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/descarga-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/descarga-1-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/>\u2014How has the band lived during the pandemic? I know that Paul Nash\u2019s father sadly passed away because of Covid.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth:<\/strong> There have been many pros and a few cons. We lost Paul\u2019s Dad and I have lost my (canine) baby, and I know I don\u2019t need to tell you how much we miss them. However, being at home has been a blessing in many ways because we had all the time to carry on working on <em>Sailing Mirrors<\/em> in our studio and enjoy some healing time together. We were lucky to have a couple of awesome gigs immediately before lockdown started. We supported <strong>Toyah<\/strong> on the 29th of February in Scarborough and then performed at Porta Nigra Festival in Belgium on the 7th of March. Then it all froze, but not for us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014What can you tell us of your last album, <em>The Loop<\/em>? It\u2019s quite different from everything that you have done before, with sounds closer to prog and even jazz sometimes. What made you go in this direction?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: It\u2019s an interesting question and from the start of writing the tracks of <em>The Loop<\/em> we were exploring ways of evolving the sound and the addition of brass in some tracks just came naturally &#8211; time signatures are always something that we explore with tracks. I guess there is certain prog and art rock influences there &#8211; for me it makes it more interesting than the standard 4\/4, certainly it stretches the playing and the sound and if it works then why not. Personally I feel it\u2019s just another evolution and for me it still sounds like TDS. W<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">e\u2019ve explored alternative instrumentation and non standard time signatures before and maybe there\u2019s just a bit more of it on <em>The Loop<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014In a review I read that the album was recorded mainly live. Can you please tell us more about this?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: We made the conscious decision to record the main parts live to get the energy and feel of the tracks rather than a sterile (to a click) performance &#8211; we actually went into Young Thug\u2019s studio in York and recorded completely live for audio and video before we recorded the album which turned out amazingly well and we release this as a giveaway with preorders for <em>The Loop. <\/em>From there we knew we were ready and went to Old Chapel in Leeds to lay down the tracks live &#8211; and we completed overdubs afterwards before starting the mixing and mastering process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014Maeth, you demonstrated an incredible vocal range in this album, from operatic moments to jazzy songs. It looks like you wanted to go as far as possible with your singing. What can you please tell us of the approach that you took with the vocals of Loop?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth: <\/strong>I love exploring all sorts of styles and I adore challenges. I have been singing since my early teens and I am loving the journey. <em>The Loop<\/em> was a true inspiration to me because it gave me the chance to expand my style even more. It\u2019s developed into different types of singing from operatic to raw belting you couldn\u2019t think to match until a few decades ago, without risking crucifixion from the purists \ud83d\ude09\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The jazzy hints were perhaps the most unexpected of all. We are intending to carry on with the experimentations in the new album definitely. There\u2019s something so empowering about not fitting into a box!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014In 2020,<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong> the band released a live recording with material from 1980 to 1982 and also released on Bandcamp a live album from the Danse Crazy days. Are you going to publish more material from those days? Have you ever thought of releasing an album with the classic songs sang by Maethelyiah?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: Yes, I was preparting the <em>40 years of Danse<\/em> and found a lot of interesting stuff. To find out more this is where I plug subscribing to our channels including our Bandcamp page (dansesociety.bandcamp.com). Maybe a live album would be fun. We always play a selection of the old tracks live, usually never the same twice, but they are great fun to perform and obviously with a female vocal it adds a different edge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth:<\/strong> You raise quite an interesting point. We enjoyed releasing &#8220;Come Inside&#8221; in an exclusive soundtrack version for Italian movie St@lker in 2013, and we also released a special version of &#8220;Seduction 2012&#8221; which you can enjoy on YouTube (late night viewing only). Yes, you can find the back catalogue on the band\u2019s Bandcamp page. However we are not planning to record old tracks with me because we have plenty of new ideas to keep us busy. However, you are more than welcome to come to our gigs. We always make sure half the set list is back catalogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u2014Were you happy with the <em>40 Years of Danse<\/em> compilation? How did you choose the tracks?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin: 0cm; font-stretch: normal; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2014<strong>Paul<\/strong>: <span class=\"s1\">40 years is a long time, I suppose. We are hitting 45 now and we had over 120 published tracks to choose from so it was never going to be easy to decide what to leave out. In the end, I wanted a track list that would reflect not only the evolution of the band but also displayed some of the more (in my opinion) interesting compositions that some people may not have discovered. It also had to work as a stand alone collection so that had to be taken into consideration too as well as putting on the obvious most popular tracks<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014What are the plans of the band in the future?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Paul:<\/strong> Finishing the last couple of tracks for the new album which I\u2019m very excited about. It\u2019s again a mixture of styles and themes and there are even, dare I say, some more commercial tracks on there as well as more experimental stuff. Looking forward to Spain and more live dates too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014What can we expect of your concert at Santuario?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u2014Maeth: <\/strong>We can\u2019t wait to bounce backwards and forwards in time with our Spanish supporters. There\u2019s over 4 decades of songs to dance and sing along. Newer and older generations are more than welcome to join together and have a night they\u2019ll never forget. Every gig for us is a real bonding experience. Honestly we can\u2019t wait to enjoy Madrid.
