One of the surprises of this year has been the synthpop project Scenius, a band that has caught our attention with each of their singles. The duo of Steve Whitfield and Fabrice Nau has released their first album, entitled Enough Fears <\/em>just one week ago, where we can find three of their previous singles and eight new tracks. Eleven songs that aren\u2019t less than dreams.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\"\"\u2014Steve you are also part of Klammer, a band that has appeared a few <\/span>times in our news section but we have never talked with any of you. <\/span>What can you please tell us about Klammer? Any plans for the future?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: Klammer<\/strong> have recorded a new album and we are in the final <\/span>stages of the mixing process. We are currently in exciting talks with <\/span>a larger label than we\u2019ve been released on so far. So hopefully we can <\/span>announce some news about that in Jan 2021!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve you have also produced many records (The Cure, The Mission, <\/span>Jane Weaver). How do you think that these experiences have helped your <\/span>vision as a musician?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve:<\/strong> I\u2019ve learnt so much from working with other bands and artists, <\/span>I don\u2019t think Scenius<\/strong> and Klammer<\/strong> would sound like they do without my <\/span>years of studio experience with them all. It\u2019s not just about the <\/span>technical stuff either, but how to (and how not) to organise a band, <\/span>I\u2019ve also taken a lot from bands that self employed or never really <\/span>got started properly. There\u2019s a lot to learn about what not to do. The <\/span>3 bands you\u2019ve just mentioned have definitely taught me that you have <\/span>to do your own thing and stay true to yourselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve, how and when did you meet Fabrice Nau?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: I recorded Fabrice\u2019s band years ago and we got on really well <\/span>and stayed in touch. He came over to England last year and popped into <\/span>visit. He saw my studio and asked if I still used my old analog <\/span>synths. When he got back to France, he asked if I fancied trying to <\/span>write some songs together using the old synths. Once we\u2019d done the <\/span>first one, there was a burst of creativity and very quickly most of the <\/span>album came together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice, can you please tell us more about the bands you played with before Scenius?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: Oh yes. First, the band Steve has just mentioned which was <\/span>called The Drift<\/strong>. It was a guitar-based band we formed as teenagers in <\/span>the small town where we were getting really bored. There were <\/span>definitely post-punk influences in our music. We loved bands like Echo <\/strong><\/span>and The Bunnymen<\/strong>, early Cure<\/strong> stuff, Joy Division<\/strong>, but we were also <\/span>into noisier bands like Pixies<\/strong>, Girls Against Boys<\/strong>, Sonic Youth<\/strong>, as <\/span>well as some more electronic stuff like Sofa Surfers<\/strong>, Amon Tobin<\/strong>, <\/span>Massive Attack<\/strong>. At first we had bought guitars instead of synths just <\/span>cause they were cheaper and easier to find, but we later added samples <\/span>and synths. Then I was just about to start releasing solo songs when <\/span>Scenius<\/strong> took shape.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Now that you mention all those bands, I would like to ask the both of you, which other electronic acts have influenced you?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: Kraftwerk<\/strong>, Eno\/Bowie<\/strong>, John Foxx<\/strong>\/Ultravox<\/strong>, Cabaret Voltaire<\/strong> and <\/span>more recently Boards Of Canada<\/strong> and LCD Sound System<\/strong>, but it\u2019s not just <\/span>electronic bands that have influenced Scenius<\/strong>, there are also so many <\/span>guitar bands that have had a big effect on us. <\/span>I think one of the reasons I keep going back to earlier synth-based <\/span>music is that all the bands sound so different from each other. They <\/span>only had a limited amount of equipment and they had to try really hard <\/span>to make and record those sounds. I think today it\u2019s almost too easy, <\/span>you can switch on software like Reason or Garage Band on a laptop and <\/span>quickly finish a track that sounds like anyone else. I<\/span> think my brain is definitely hard-wired in a European way of <\/span>thinking when it comes to music. Most of the stuff I like comes from a <\/span>European tradition rather than American blues roots. I think for both <\/span>of us, it has to have a melody. Even if you\u2019re trying to do something <\/span>out on the fringe, I still like it to have a strong melody.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: We definitely share this passion for that really amazing <\/span>burst of creativity that happened in the late 70\u2019s and early 80\u2019s \u2013 <\/span>and which, of course, doesn\u2019t boil down to electronic outfits. In fact, <\/span>I wouldn\u2019t say I care a lot about whether the music I listen to is <\/span>electronic or not, I just want it to touch and inspire me. Instruments <\/span>are just tools, once you know how to make a few notes with them you <\/span>can start getting creative, especially if you don\u2019t care too much <\/span>about so-called rules and codes. That\u2019s what Punk made clear to the <\/span>world \u2013 just like Dada had done a few decades before with visual arts. <\/span>So you can very well be influenced by guitar bands and make electronic <\/span>music and vice versa. This being said, in addition to the electronic <\/span>bands Steve has mentioned there are a few others I\u2019ve listened to a lot l<\/span>ike Front 242<\/strong>, Trisomie 21<\/strong>, Norma Loy<\/strong>, Jean-Michel Jarre<\/strong>, Air<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014The name of the band comes from a term coined by Brian Eno, right? <\/span>What do you like of \"\"the music of the creator of the Ambient<\/em> series? Do <\/span>you think that he has been an influence in tracks like \u201cHeld\u201d?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: I have listened to the Ambient<\/em> albums a lot over the years, so <\/span>I guess the answer would have to be yes, but I\u2019d also have to put some <\/span>of the work he did with Bowie in there too, especially the 2nd side of <\/span>the Low<\/em> album. There are a lot of other influences in there too: The <\/strong><\/span>Cure<\/strong>\u2019s Faith<\/em>, Orbital<\/strong> and even Erik Satie<\/strong> just to name but a few.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: I like the fact that he\u2019s invented Post-Punk before Punk even <\/span>happened! Several of his songs as early as 1974 were brilliant <\/span>New-Wave prototypes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014You have been using analogue synths as much as possible as you have <\/span>said, what are the advantages for you against digital?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: Well there are disadvantages in operation but advantages in sound. <\/span>Old analog synths are slower to use, no presets (not on mine anyway), <\/span>you have to keep manually tuning them, I only have one that I can <\/span>store sounds on, and then it\u2019s only has 16 memories! Locking them <\/span>together is also much more complicated. The great thing about them is <\/span>the sound. They don\u2019t stay the same as the sound moves, they can sound <\/span>warm and you have to make your own sounds. Even if I write the <\/span>settings down or take a photo when I set that sound up again, it\u2019s <\/span>always slightly different. So we mainly used analog synths but we did <\/span>record into Pro Tools which is a digital recording software. Using Pro <\/span>Tools enabled me to do things to the old synths I couldn\u2019t have done <\/span>with tape. <\/span>No presets were used on the album. I hear too many new electronic <\/span>bands that sound like they have just run through the presets on new <\/span>synths to make songs, and a lot of them just sound the same as each <\/span>other. I also hand played in a lot of the synths into Pro Tools (the <\/span>recording software) rather than use midi and overly tighten up the <\/span>playing, so there\u2019s a human feel and warmth that comes from doing <\/span>that, not everything is perfect.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014What are Fabrice\u2019s influences for the lyrics? It must be difficult <\/span>sometimes to write lyrics in a different language.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: I find it pretty inspiring to write in English. First, <\/span>probably because most of the bands I\u2019ve been listening to over the <\/span>years sing in English. Writing in English sets me in a mood that is <\/span>associated with a feeling of escape, exoticism. A mood that\u2019s quite <\/span>inspiring in itself. Also I like to keep lyrics slightly elusive and <\/span>English has a structure that works really well for that. French is <\/span>less flexible in a way. But I do like to write in French too. <\/span>It\u2019s hard to say what influences me the most. I like many songwriters <\/span>of course, like Lou Reed,<\/strong> Bowie<\/strong>, Ian Curtis<\/strong>, Leonard Cohen<\/strong>, and many <\/span>poets, like Paul Eluard, Yves Bonnefoy, Antonio Gamoneda. And I often <\/span>find popular Science books and Philosophy treaties very inspiring too. <\/span>So it\u2019s probably a mix of all that in the end. Usually the first bits <\/span>of lyrics come along as I\u2019m trying to come up with a melody. I like to <\/span>preserve these bits of automatic lyrics as much as possible and build <\/span>around them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve:<\/strong> I must say Fabrice\u2019s English is excellent, which must make this <\/span>difficult task much easier!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014In a book I am currently reading, the writer talks about the contract <\/strong><\/span>between cold synth sounds and a warm voice saying that it was really <\/span>caught his attention in electronic music for the first time. Do you <\/span>think that that description fits the music of Scenius?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: Yeah I think there\u2019s something in that. Although rather than <\/span>cold sounds, I\u2019d properly describe them as warm sounds with dark <\/span>melodies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: As for the vocals, I\u2019d say it\u2019s a mix of warm and dark too. <\/span>There are obviously much warmer voice timbers than mine and, just like <\/span>the rest of the music, it seems to me that my vocals melodies <\/span>sometimes have dark shades.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"\u2014How did the two of you compose the tracks of the album?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve:<\/strong> I get the music together and send it over to Fabrice. He then <\/span>sends a rough take back with vocals, that\u2019s usually in a different <\/span>arrangement. So I then have to rearrange the music to fit his vocals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: Then I record the final vocals at my place. Sometimes I\u2019ll <\/span>include vocals FX-ed tracks cause I like to tamper with vocal takes <\/span>and Steve enjoys the weird voices I come up with. I send these as <\/span>separate audio tracks to Steve – who sometimes adds some backing <\/span>vocals himself \u2013 and he does the mixing in his studio. It rarely <\/span>takes more than a couple of mixes before we call it done.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014We have been celebrating any new single of the band and finally we <\/span>have the full album. Is there anything you would like to share with us <\/span>about your feelings\/thoughts about the album?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve:<\/strong> I must say a big thank you for your support from the very start <\/span>of the band. We\u2019re really happy with the album. I\u2019m really happy it <\/span>sounds like an album rather than just a collection of songs. I tried <\/span>to use the same sounds as a starting point for each song to help <\/span>gel them together, but, of course, as I continued to write, sounds would <\/span>be added or changed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: It\u2019s been a very easy-going process, both purposeful and <\/span>enjoyable. We\u2019ve had no other target than making music we like and <\/span>care for \u2013 plus maybe a certain will to surprise each other which <\/span>makes for a very healthy competition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Is it difficult to keep the project without being in the same place? <\/span>I mean it must have some good and bad things like not being able to <\/span>play together?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: Fabrice and I haven\u2019t even been in the same country, never mind <\/span>the same room through the writing and recording of the singles and <\/span>album! So I don\u2019t think the lockdowns have changed anything for us, we <\/span>would have worked like this anyway. <\/span>when we are finally allowed to get together, it\u2019ll certainly be good to <\/span>get some band photos done and rehearse the live set together!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>; I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever thought it was going to be difficult <\/span>to work this way. We knew from the start we\u2019d have to do it all via <\/span>file transfers and emails. And in the end we\u2019ve been lucky that the <\/span>way we work was very lockdown-compatible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014One song of the album, Superpos\u00e9s is in French. Are we going to have <\/span>more in the future?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice:<\/strong> Probably yes. I\u2019m not even sure why there\u2019s just one on this <\/span>album \u2013 well in fact there\u2019s some French in \u201cHeld\u201d too. It wasn\u2019t <\/span>calculated anyway, I really like to write and sing in French as well, <\/span>so I can\u2019t see why there would not be more in the future. All the more <\/span>that Steve likes it too \u2013 I guess it sounds more exotic than English <\/span>to him \u263a<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve:<\/strong> Yes, I hope there\u2019ll be more songs in French.<\/span><\/p>

\u2014One of the previous singles, Glass Rain won\u2019t be in the album, can <\/span>you please tell us why?\"\"<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Fabrice<\/strong>: We had 12 tracks and our only plan was to start the album <\/span>with Make it Shiny and then add the song that works best after that <\/span>first track and so on until there would be no song that works well <\/span>enough after the last one added. So, with this kind of DJ method, we <\/span>could just as well have ended up with only 8 or 9 songs on the album. <\/span>In fact, it was a rather good surprise that only one song couldn\u2019t find <\/span>its way on the album.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: We both really like Glass Rain but felt we couldn\u2019t put all the <\/span>early singles on the album and also I\u2019m not sure it fits perfectly <\/span>with the rest of the tracks<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Scenius has a gig planned for October 2021, how are you planning the <\/span>concerts of the band?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Steve<\/strong>: We have already started work on the live set and I\u2019ve bought <\/span>some new synths to take out live, as I don\u2019t want to take my old <\/span>analogs out on the road (too precious and unreliable)! I\u2019ve taken it <\/span>all out to Klammer<\/strong>\u2019s rehearsal room and blasted it through the PA to <\/span>check it\u2019s going to work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014What can we expect of Scenius in the future? I know that things are <\/span>not easy at the moment due to the pandemic, but do you already have <\/span>any other plans for 2021, apart from the concert mentioned before?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>
