The title of the new album by John Fryer\u2019<\/strong>s\u00a0Black Needle Noise <\/strong>is a reference to his classic 80s project This Mortal Coil<\/strong> where some 4AD artists covered some of Ivo Watts-Russell\u2019s favorite tunes. As\u00a0John Fryer<\/strong> explained in an interview, he wants to use different singers in BNN<\/strong>, so in this album we have Anjela Piccard singing three songs, Rebecca Coseboom and Pinky Turzo doing two and Tom Berger, Betty X and the Fryer<\/strong> himself interpreting one each one. This is the third album of the project after Before the Tears Came <\/em>and\u00a0Lost in Reflections<\/em>, without forgetting the ReMIXes<\/em> album released in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The album starts with an almost unrecognisable Bang Bang<\/strong>, popularised by Nancy Sinatra<\/strong>, where we can find John Fryer<\/strong> singing and giving an industrial rock sound to the track, especially in the chorus. Next, we can find the spectral cover of \u201cWhat a Wonder World\u201d that we reviewed one week ago and that was released as single.\u00a0The album continues with Olivia Newton-John\u2019<\/strong>s \u201cMagic\u201d, <\/strong>one of the tracks more upbeat, pop and danceable of the album and with an interpretation by Beca with the same disco vibe as the original. This cover contrasts extremely with the following song where Anjela Piccard sings furiously her version of punk masters TSOL\u2019<\/strong>s \u201cBlack Magic\u201d. Musically, the approach is more rock this time. The album moves back to more familiar territories with a sensual \u201cWalking in My Shoes\u201d. For this occasion, Depeche Mode\u2019<\/strong>s classic is sung by Rebecca Coseboom and John<\/strong> Fryer<\/strong> provides a very detailed production. More elegant and also sensual is the cover made by Anjela of \u201cLove Don\u2019t Live Here Anymore\u201d, a hit that we know thanks to Rose Royce <\/strong>and one of the best moments of the album. There is also\u00a0Bowie\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cChanges\u201d with the voice of Pinky Turzo<\/strong> who makes the song even more dramatic. The album continues with Black Crowes\u2019<\/strong>s\u00a0\u201cShe Talks to Angels\u201d, again with Anjela singing. Not being especially a fan of the original classic sound, I have really enjoyed this \u201cupdate\u201d of the song that is one of the best cover of the album.\u00a0The immortal \u201cLosing My Religion\u201d is here sung by Rebecca Coseboom, becoming a bit darker and edgy. \u201cLet This Be The Night,\u201d sang by Pinky Turzo sounds classic but I could not find out whose cover it is. The album finishes with the most danceable track of the album, \u201cI know What Boys Like\u201d, original of The Waitresses<\/strong> and with Betty X singing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As I have repeatedly said, I am a big fan of covers album and this These Mortal Covers<\/em> is a really interesting one. Some of the covers are better than the originals, as least in my appreciation, because some of them were already great songs but here they have a sound that I really enjoy more. And of course, it\u2019s always a pleasure to hear new material from the musician who, for me, defined the sound of the eighties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
