Berlin-based band NNHMN are finally getting the recognition they deserve and becoming one of the top acts of the darkwave genre. Thanks to their potent releases and a very tight agenda of concerts, the duo is getting more and more famous. If you haven’t seen them live yet, they are playing next week at DarkMad Festival in Madrid.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\"\"\u2014NNHMN was first called Non-Human Persons, right? Why did you change the name? I see you released one album, No Fear<\/em>, and several singles\/EP.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u2014<\/b>Lee<\/strong>: Violaine, thanks for having us. We don\u2019t feel we changed it we just synthesized it.\u00a0Symbolically NonHuman expresses compactly what we are or maybe what we feel we are.<\/span><\/p>

\u2014As you just said NNHMN stands for NonHuman, but why? Do you think we\u2019ve lost our humanity? Or maybe you consider yourselves out of this world?<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u2014<\/b>Lee<\/strong>: NNHMN<\/strong> is an abbreviation of NonHuman.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>To me, NonHuman<\/strong> – it\u2019s like the observation of the world without Hypocrisy. Being naked. A strip-tease from being-a human-nowadays.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Michal:<\/strong> It\u2019s rather about the connection to the non-human world, to the beginning of synthetic culture, the connection between mind and nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u2014You are from Poland. We know quite well the metal scene there, as we used to go to OFF Festival. Could you tell us how the goth scene in your country is?<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u2014<\/b>Lee<\/strong>: I do speak and read in 3 languages, maybe not perfect but still – and have lived abroad for 7 years now, you know…\u00a0I am not sure any more what is \u2019\u2019my country\u201c – especially now when nationalism is growing globally. I do feel a European, or maybe a Berliner for now. There are specifics of the country you come from, those subtle things, the language you live most comfortably in but I don\u2019t know any more – it has started to be somehow ambiguous to me. I am equally interested in news from the world*, Germany or Poland. But am a kind of local patriot, I keep an eye on my home town, being sometimes proud, sometimes terrified. Very emotional stuff – this memory of the child.<\/span><\/p>

*We did play at the Off Festival 2 times actually, very good memories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

*We did play at Castle Party festival – we could call it an equivalent of WGT in Poland. We played in an old gothic church, it has been an amazing experience. The audience is fantastic there, and the reception was excellent. <\/span>This is the most important goth\/industrial festival in Poland. Besides the Wroc\u0142aw Industrial Festival, of course. <\/span>It is taking place in an old castle in the stunning landscape of <\/span>Lower Silesia Province. <\/b>But unfortunately, I do not have any revelation about the Goth scene in Poland as we left the country quite long ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2014Now you live in Berlin. Many artists we interviewed live there, do you think this city has something special that attracts artists?<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u2014<\/b>Lee<\/strong>: Berlin really is a special place full of creative creatures, stunning architecture and districts. I can\u2019t stop loving it while cycling or running through Kiez\u2019es (as we say in German about your vicinity). But still would like to live at the border of Berlin and nature around because I miss it(the nature).<\/span><\/p>

I think it\u2019s important for not only an artist but for a human animal to find your tribe\/quasi family\/ so – individuals who think, feel alike. In Berlin, you definitely can find such a thing as a creative creature.\u00a0<\/span>However, very many people find extreme loneliness here. So it\u2019s also a tricky city. \"\"<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The city of Berlin also helps artists with a lot of things and a lot of creatives are in need because in these capitalistic circumstances we are all stuck in, one can work really hard yet not being able to pay one\u2019s bills. I know talented artists who barely are able to meet the ends – especially now – in the pandemic time.<\/span><\/p>

\u2014Michal:<\/strong> Berlin is a nice city to live in – not too big like London or New York, full of creative people and I feel the city is very cultural and social orientated.\u00a0\u2026 And we have here a lot of rabbits in the city. hehe.\u00a0That\u2019s the funny story. When Berlin was divided by the wall (actually two walls,\u00a0with the no-go-area in between)\u00a0rabbits have had a safe place\u00a0to grow the population between the walls (no foxes, no enemies, just DDR soldiers). As the wall collapsed, all of a sudden\u00a0rabbis got freedom and a whole city to live in.\u00a0So now rabbits are all around, you can meet them in parks and neighbourhoods, play grounds, etc.\u00a0really lovely (there is actually great doc on that).<\/span><\/p>

\u2014Which bands influenced you?<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u2014<\/b>Lee<\/strong>:<\/span> Too many\u2026 –<\/span>that\u2019s why I will try to post some playlists on Spotify to present some of them -I did find it fun, I put together one already -it\u2019s called \ud835\udc02\ud835\udc0e\ud835\udc0b\ud835\udc03 \ud835\udc12\ud835\udc07\ud835\udc08\ud835\udc0d\ud835\udc08\ud835\udc0d\ud835\udc06 because of the atmosphere and moon like light in all the tracks there.<\/span><\/p>

\u2014Michal:<\/strong> Yep too many. Starting from punk and metal bands, going through rock bands to avant techno, dark disco. No limits, but common ground is probably a raw minimalistic sound and somehow psychedelic approach. <\/span>Actually lastly I\u2019m coming back to the roots, and we spent a week ago a whole evening listening to Polish punk bands from 80\/90s. And I\u2019m still very impressed by Siekiera <\/strong>band and Nowa Aleksandria<\/em>, how perfect sounds this album.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
