{"id":22121,"date":"2020-07-26T18:17:27","date_gmt":"2020-07-26T16:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/?p=22121"},"modified":"2024-05-29T16:12:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T14:12:16","slug":"jean-marc-lederman-experience-letters-to-gods-and-fallen-angels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/en\/jean-marc-lederman-experience-letters-to-gods-and-fallen-angels\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean-Marc Lederman Experience &#8211; Letters to Gods (And Fallen Angels)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">On the cover of the classic <em>This is Electronic Body Music<\/em> (1988), together with <strong>Front 242<\/strong>, <strong>The Neon Judgement<\/strong>, <strong>\u00e0;GRUMH&#8230;<\/strong>, <strong>Parade Ground<\/strong>, <strong>The Cassandra Complex<\/strong>, <strong>Chris and Cosey<\/strong> and a few more names, we could find <strong>The Weathermen<\/strong>, the EBM duo formed by the late Bruce Geduldig and <strong>Jean-Marc Lederman<\/strong>. We have already talked about Mr <strong>Lederman <\/strong>when we reviewed his album <em>The Helpless Voyage of The Titanic<\/em> and now that he has released <em>Letters To Gods<\/em>, we have also bought some of his latest works. Following the steps of his previous <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em>, this album is another incredible collection of songs, born from the collaboration with 22 artists that have been asked for a letter to a god or a fallen angel. An excuse as good as any to bring us this 24 tracks where we can find some musicians who have worked with <strong>Lederman<\/strong> in the past together with other interesting artists providing vocals and lyrics that have been produced by the expert hands of Jean-Marc Lederman, creating this great album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A recording from some aliens who have found a CD of a lost civilization (ours) works as an introduction for <em>Letters to Gods<\/em>. The album starts properly with the fantastic synth-pop of \u201cAll or my Life\u201d with Agi Taralas from the duo <strong>Our Banshee,<\/strong> who already collaborated in <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em>. And the following \u201cletter\u201d is a great dreamy song with Emma Barson (<strong>Promenade Cinema<\/strong>). We don\u2019t have the time to wake up, as we continue dreaming with \u201cDemon\u2019s Crawl Rework 2019\u201d, a track that, like the name states, is a new version of a song by <strong>Ghost and Writer, <\/strong>another project\u00a0of <strong>Lederman <\/strong>and Frank M. Spinath. For this occasion, they added a new work of cello and leave it more minimal and quite dark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22113 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/103670165_10159014094237952_3856140734155727597_n-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/103670165_10159014094237952_3856140734155727597_n-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/103670165_10159014094237952_3856140734155727597_n-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/103670165_10159014094237952_3856140734155727597_n-585x329.jpg 585w, https:\/\/elgarajedefrank.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/103670165_10159014094237952_3856140734155727597_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>My favorite piece of music of the album has the sensual voice of Mari Kattman from <strong>Helix<\/strong> (and also part of another project with <strong>Lederman: Marie and The Ghost)<\/strong> and reminds me of my beloved<strong>\u00a0Bel Canto<\/strong>. We continue visiting old friends of <strong>Jean-Marc<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Lederman<\/strong> and now it\u2019s the turn of Jay Aston from <strong>Gene Loves Jezebel<\/strong>, the classic band from the 80s where Lederman played, and who delivers a song full of dark romanticism. Jean-Marc seems to take inspiration from the sounds of music boxes to create the beautiful and innocent song in French \u201cLettre \u00c0 P\u00e9l\u00e9\u201d where some members of <strong>Atome <\/strong>collaborate<strong>. <\/strong><strong>Christina Z<\/strong> (writer of comic books like Witchblade and Magnesium Burn) jumps from the strips to frighten us with her spoken word accompanied by some disturbing and cinematographic jazz. The spoken word gets faster and becomes rap in the mouth of Mexican artist <strong>Das Vintage<\/strong>, who delivers a letter to his father with killer rhymes. We go back to more classical (at least for me) sounds with another great track \u201cHeaven\u201d, with Lucia Fairfull from Scottish band <strong>Lucia<\/strong>. Stefan Netschio from the classic band <strong>Beborn Beton<\/strong>, and also guess voice in <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em> brings us a very commercial and powerful song that reminds me slightly of <strong>And One<\/strong>, especially at the very beginning. The first half of <em>Letters to Gods<\/em> finishes with an extract from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as disturbing as the famous book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In the second CD, we have a group of big names and a more electronic result: this \u201cB-side\u201d starts with Elena Alice Fossi from<strong>\u00a0Kirlian Camera<\/strong> (a band that doesn\u2019t need introduction between our readers), in a more danceable track sung with a lot of sensuality in a register that really fits her. Elena Alice had already collaborated in <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em>, so you now have another reason to buy it. The following track reminds me a bit of <strong>Depeche Mode, <\/strong>it\u2019s the letter from\u00a0Tom Shear from classic band<strong>\u00a0Assemblage 21<\/strong> and also in <strong>Helix <\/strong>with <strong>Mari Kattman,<\/strong> delivering a catchy song sung with great intensity. The album continues with industrial sounds that remind me again of <strong>Depeche Mode\u2019s <\/strong>C<em>onstruction Time Again; <\/em>the song where Mark Hockings from <strong>MESH<\/strong> (who also collaborated in <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em>) performs is another powerful and brilliant track. Another of the guess singers, Jenna Fearon manages to astonish us with her amazing cover of <strong>Nick Cave\u2019<\/strong>s \u201cInto My Arms\u201d, curiously the first single that I bought on CD. Her take is minimalist, fragile and passionate. It\u2019s certainly difficult to improve the original but this version can be easily considered as good as Nick Cave\u2019s classic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The singer of <strong>Chiasm<\/strong>, Emileigh Rohn surprises us with a perfect performance in a track with a production. of the best electronica. We continue with Miriam Christina from<strong>\u00a0580 Mile<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong> and another of the tracks that we have liked the most, with a very original production. The letter from Haydn Park (<strong>The Ninth Wave<\/strong>) makes us fall in love with another felt interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Our beloved Rodney Orpheus (<strong>The Cassandra Complex)<\/strong> sings in the jazzy \u201cSophisticated Evening\u201d with a register quite far from what he usually delivers. I highly recommend hearing this track to all the fans of the creators of\u00a0<em>The War Against Sleep <\/em>because they will be surprised with this side of Rodney. We also have\u00a0Louise Fraser (another collaborator in <em>13 Ghost Stories<\/em>) in the song <em>I\u2019m Falling<\/em> that reminds me a bit of 90s trip hop, mainly at the beginning before Louise\u2019s beautiful voice fills the song with light. The track with Lis Van Den Akker\u00a0(<strong>Misery)<\/strong> is dark and solemn as I like it. Another of the artists that we love at El Garaje, manages to impress me at the end of the album: Claus Larsen (<strong>L<b>e\u00e6<\/b>ther Strip) <\/strong>delivers an incredible performance. The album finishes with a text by Nietzsche that starts with a piano and finishes with some angelical choruses that Tim Burton would kill for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Two texts, one by Philipe Genion (<strong>\u00e0;GRUMH&#8230;<\/strong>) and the other by Ceratomia complete this amazing work that can be bought in a very nice hardcover art book published by Wool-E Records. The beautiful edition really fits the content: an album where nothing really stands up because everything has an incredible quality, from the outstanding performances to the work of Lederman that it\u2019s close to perfection.
