The first album by French duo Dear Deer has been reissued this October 14th, coinciding with its tenth anniversary. Following a demo released a year earlier, in 2016 the duo released OH MY…, a nine-track debut that now reaches nineteen tracks thanks to live recordings and demos. The band has also played a very special show centered on this album in their native Lille. OH MY… has been reissued as a double LP edition on white vinyl handled by Manic Depression, and on CD digipack released by Swiss Dark Night.
On this first album we can find influences from Wire, Sonic Youth’s and No Wave abrasive guitars, and a bit of the sensuality of Minimal Compact too. The duo made up of Federico Iovino and Sabatel recorded an urgent, catchy album with nine varied tracks ranging from a poetic essay on the work Arnolfini Portrait, to references to Greek myths on “Disco-discord,” leaving a classic for posterity such as “Claudine In Berlin.” For this reissue, OH MY… has been completed with several demos: “Traitor,” “Clinical/Physical,” and an instrumental version of the track “Dear Deer” from 2012, which let us trace the band’s evolution. We also find three live tracks recorded in 2016 and a couple of remixes of “Claudine en Berlin,” one by Embers and another by Zaatar. This track also appears in a modernized version from this same year.
For El Garaje, this is a band we associate with the sad times of the COVID pandemic, since we got to see them live at the Liège festival during those days, at a mini festival that we enjoyed enormously, both for the music and for how exceptional it was given the circumstances. They were presenting their second album, Chew-chew, which was full of great compositions like “Nadia Comaneci,” “Dogflight” or “Jog, Chat, Work And Gula-gula,” though they also pulled out a track or two from their first album. Also during that period they gave a series of concerts in different parts of their home, which later appeared on the CD We Can Play in a Living Room. Since then, the duo has released a split with Embers, an LP titled Collect And Reject in 2022, and an EP last year.
